According to local legend, if you accidentally step into this waterway running down the sides of the streets, you have to marry a man from Freiburg. I'm not sure where it came from, but I managed to make it onto the train coming home with dry ankles.=)

Desparate German men, no doubt... Or was it desparate German women?! ("Hey, I stepped in the water, so when are you going to get around to proposing?!") One can't be too sure, I suppose!
In any case, it is ironic that such a legend appears in a town whose name means "Free Castle."
"Sorry miss, you stepped in the water, so you are no longer free to marry anyone outside of, er, Frei... Burg... *cough*"
